Christmas Cards

This is the time of year for memories. One thinks about one’s childhood, friends from the past, Christmases past. We listen to old Xmas carols and look at the Xmas cards our friends and family send.

I’m looking at a particularly beautiful card, sent by an old friend from Oxford. Thank you, Debbie! The card is by a mouth and foot painting artist, and it’s called Fun in the Snow. There are spruce trees there, houses, children making a snowman, people crossing a bridge and Father Christmas sitting in a sleigh pulled by four reindeer.

In an old Christmas poem, The Night Before Christmas, Saint Nicholas (Santa Claus) has eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donder and Blitzen. Rudolph the rednosed reindeer came later.

I have the said poem in a book illustrated by Tasha Tudor.
This is how it begins:

“T’was the night before Christmas.
When all through the house
Not a creature was stirring.
not even a mouse;

The stockings were hung
by the chimney with care,
In the hopes that Saint Nicholas
soon would be there...
